Why It Is Good To Wear Shoes During Training

    Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Last night my friend broke his pinkie toe during a simple jujitsu exercise. This is the drill where you are on all fours and then you move your leg toward one of your hands and thrust your head up. This drill is to get to sweeping your opponent off your back, a dominant position. He didn’t just hairline fracture it he completely broke it at a 45 degree angle on the bone at the base of the toe . Ouch!

The red line shows how the toe was broken.

I am sure you are thinking what I am thinking. It’s just a pinkie toe! Toe injuries can be very painful and can make you very uncomfortable. The type of break he has is the worse kind for the toe and is not easy to splint. I am sure he will be hopped up on some nice medication for the pain but it still just sucks. He is probably going to be out of training for awhile too.
This incident makes us all realize why it is a good idea to wear shoes during training. Especially jujitsu training. I don’t know how many times I have broken toe nails, got toe jams, got mat burns, had hair ripped out. You don’t realize just how bad you are hurting yourself when you train because of the adrenaline. I was already thinking about investing in some more protective gear but now I am going to do it for sure.
